Jags Close Regular Season with Win Over Wakefield, Turn Attention to Playoffs

May 6, 2026 – Win vs. Wakefield
Final: Athens Drive 8, Wakefield 5
In a physical conference battle against Wakefield, Athens Drive leaned on strong defense, faceoff dominance, and timely scoring to secure an 8–5 victory and finish the regular season with a 17–5 overall record and an impressive 11–3 in conference play.
Jack Danjczek led the offense with 2 goals and 1 assist, while Liam Danjczek added 2 goals of his own. Harrison Baublitz finished with 1 goal and 2 assists, Ethan Klein posted 1 goal and 1 assist, and Hayes Clayton added 1 goal and 1 assist. Bradyn Evans also found the net, and Reiter Healey chipped in an assist.
The ground ball battle was truly a team effort. Michael Wirt, Sam Brewer, Hayes Clayton, Jack Danjczek, and Greyson Deak all collected 4 ground balls each, while Tripp Burney, Reiter Healey, and Bradyn Evans added 3 apiece.
Defensively, the Jags were active all over the field. Andrew Moore caused 3 turnovers, Hayes Clayton forced 2, and six other Athens players recorded a caused turnover. At the faceoff stripe, Sam Brewer dominated possession with 10 wins and an 83.3% win percentage, while Michael Wirt went 4-for-5 for an impressive 80%.
Gabe Sell anchored the defense with another strong performance in goal, stopping 11 shots for a 68.8% save percentage as the Jags closed out their last regular season game with a win.
With the regular season now complete, the Jags head into the postseason carrying momentum, confidence, and a lot of belief in what this group can accomplish together.
As the No. 4 seed in the East, the Jags earned a first-round bye and will host the winner of Wakefield vs. Rolesville in the second round on May 14. Considering Athens just closed the regular season with an 8–5 win over Wakefield, there is a good chance of an immediate rematch under the playoff lights.
